Uterus
The internal reproductive organ in a woman that is designed to sustain an embryo from the fertilized egg stage through to the full development of the fetus.
The uterine cavity is lined with a tissue called the endometrium. The uterine lining is renewed every month during menstruation—when pregnancy does not occur—under the influence of hormones released by the ovaries. Removal of the uterus therefore leads to the cessation of menstruation, but does not cause menopause if the ovaries are left intact.
