Supracervical Hysterectomy

Removal of the uterus. The cervix remains in place. The vagina is not opened.

Removal of the uterine body requires fragmentation using an instrument called a morcellator to extract the tissue through small incisions. To prevent contamination of the abdominal cavity, this fragmentation is often performed within a protective bag inserted into the abdomen. (A)
