Laparotomy incision

In a laparotomy, the abdominal wall is opened via an incision, which in gynecology is often horizontal or sometimes vertical. This approach allows for all types of procedures and is chosen when minimally invasive approaches are not possible. This approach is more painful than minimally invasive surgery, and recovery is slower. It also leads to more scar-related complications (pain, hematoma, abscess, hernia).
